Biografia
Close friends R.L. Huggar, Terry Brown, and Raphael Brown originally performed under the name Straight4ward before changing it to their musical alias Next. They gained fame in Minneapolis in the late 1990s and were sought after by Naughty by Nature DJ KayGee. He immediately signed them to his record label Divine Mill, which was a component of Arista Records.
Next’s debut album “Rated Next” dropped in September 1997 to mainstream success and many new fans. The album featured guest artists like Naughty By Nature, Adina Brown, Castro, and Koffee Brown. The single “Too Close” exploded on the airwaves, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and was declared as song of the year in 1998 by Billboard Magazine. Next’s first album was certified double platinum. Next received a nomination for “Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group” at the American Music Awards that year.
The band’s sophomore album “Welcome II Nextasy” was released in 2000 to moderate success but did not do as well as their first album. The song “Wifey” reached #7 on the Hot 100 and No.1 on the R&B Singles chart. Another track off of “Welcome II Nextasy” called “Beauty Queen” made it to the Billboard top twenty. The group received a nomination at the Soul Train Music Awards in “Best R&B/Soul Album: Group, Band or Duo” that year. Shortly after the debut of their second album, Next transferred to J Records for a short stint. They produced “The Next Episode” under J Records while RL simultaneously branched off to work on independent projects.
In 2006 Next collaborated with DJ Whoo Kid from G-Unit on two mixtapes: “The Moisture Mixtape” and “The Next Level” without member Raphael Brown. Next’s music has heavy influences from gospel choir and their music is compared to R&B artists Dru Hill and BLACKstreet.

Without a new album in over 10 years, contemporary R&B group Next brings back the soulfully smooth hits of the late 90s like so few can.
Slow jams and R&B grooves will not be in short supply, with their biggest hits Too Close and Wifey always making the rounds. Despite their often cheesy lyrics, you can’t deny their velvety smooth vocals and perfect harmonies (especially when they sing a cappella), commanding and pure vocals which could silence any sized auditorium. The audience, mainly women, undoubtedly eat straight from the palm of their charming hands.
Expect all the pop R&B shmooze and choreographed numbers of the late 90s, but don’t expect to see the original Next in all their glory. The Minneapolis, Minnesota trio has faced multiple personnel changes over the years. Of the original members, RL Huggar, Terry ‘T-Low’ Brown, and Raphael ‘Tweet’ Brown, only T-Low and Tweet remain. Tweet left in 2007 only to be replaced by Aaron DePonce, then returning 4 years later in 2011. Huggar departed in 2013, and most recently, DePonce in August 2014, leaving only the Brown brothers.
You can see the boys touring the US alongside fellow 90’s R&B acts Ginuwine, Blackstreet, and Jagged Edge for what’s sure to be a trip back in time.
American musical trio Next were huge frequenters of the radio airways in the late 90s and early 00s when a huge revival in smooth R & B occurred. Their music is clearly remembered well and still revered by the loyal fanbase who have packed out an intimate venue tonight despite having not heard any new music from the band for over a decade.
It doesn't appear like the group needs any new material though as they take to the stage supported by a number of soul musicians and begin a double hit opener of 'Imagine That' and 'Butta Love'. The audience is beside itself with joy as the cheers threaten to take the roof off the venue altogether. These good vibes carry on whilst the trio run through a number of hits including 'I Still Love You' 'Beauty Queen' and 'Wifey'. They tease fans by promising work is in the pipeline before performing a soulful new track 'Living Room' before they end on the much loved 'Too Close' as the room explodes in cheers to this much loved hit.
The group NEXT is so talented. They come on stage with so much energy, and their intro videos are always on point! It’s amazing to see how the crowd reacts the moment they realize that NEXT is about to take the stage.
They are Consistent! Amazing! Sexy! Fun! Talented! Vocals are always on point.
