It’s difficult to cast your mind back that far these days, but there genuinely was a time when The Vines, to fall back on an old cliche, looked set to be the ‘next big thing’ in alternative rock. ‘Get Free’ was certainly quite the way to announce themselves, when they dropped it back in 2002; a searing guitar line and aggressive vocal from frontman Craig Nicholls made the track a huge hit on alternative radio in America, won the band an ARIA award, and helped secure platinum sales of their debut album, Highly Evolved. A seven-figure view count for that song on YouTube attests to its enduring popularity, but in the years since, The Vines have never quite managed to match its success. They’re still a going concern, though, and continue to tour extensively; despite the fact that Nicholls is now they only original member left standing, their career-spanning live shows are as frenetic as ever, with the current three-piece lineup arguably sounding tighter than the Australians’ original incarnation. They’ve crowdfunded their forthcoming sixth album via PledgeMusic, which is testament to the cult fanbase that they continue to enjoy; it’s out in September, so expect UK dates to be announced for later this year or early next.
