Biografia
From an early age Ghoshal has been surrounded by music with her singer of a mother at the helm. At four years old she began her music lessons in Bengali, progressing and incorporating Hindu Classical music which she continued to study in her later years. It was during this study period that her love for Bollywood blossomed as she moved to the capital New Delhi in hopes of making it.
Goshal’s career pursuit began in 1995 when she won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition and also went on to win the musical reality television game show “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”. It was her appearance on the television show which catapulted her foray into stardom as Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali mesmerised by her performances and talent searched high and low to reach Ghoshal.
In 2002 Ghoshal made her Bollywood debut on Bhansali’s smash hit film “Devdas” where she filled in the vocal position of Aishwarya Rai’s character Paro. The success of her performance was just the start of her incredible journey as she rose to Bollywood stardom. As a result of her appearance in “Devdas” Ghoshal received numerous accolades including the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Bairi Piya” and an IIFA Award for Best Female Playback on “Dola Re”.
Aside from her illustrious Bollywood career, as a solo artist Ghoshal has released over sixteen studio albums in range of dialects including Bengali, Hindi, Tamil and Punjabi which has seen her travel across the globe performing in prestigious venues such as: Wembley Arena in London, Rosemont Theatre in Chicago and the Sydney Opera House in Australia to thousands of adoring fans.
As a recognised figure in Indian popular culture, on 26 June 2010 in the state of Ohio, Governor Ted Strickland declared it Shreya Ghoshal Day. In 2013, the Houses of Common in London honoured Ghoshal for her contribution to Indian music.

After hearing of playback artist Shreya Goshal being nominated for four National Film Awards, I thought that I would check out her soundtracks and original work. I was astounded at the beauty of her voice, and was compelled to listen to her entire back catalogue of music. With an insanely successful career in the film industry as a vocalist, she is a multi-lingual vocal sensation.
Seeing her perform live for a recital of the soundtrack for Ustad & The Divas was fantastic. The other artists, Chitra Chauhan, and Ustan Khan were also brilliant, and the way that they harmonised together was magical. When you see that style of music performed live, it gives you a new appreciation for the skill an dcontrol required to make such stunning music. Shreya also sang some of her solo tracks from other soundtracks, and completely mesmerised the audience.
Her powerful voice echoed around the theatre, and her musical abilities were showcased as she improvised around the melody of the well known songs she was performing. She also engaged gracefully with the audience, humbly thanking everyone for the opportunities she’s received. There’s no doubt that she’ll go on to keep creating more wonderful music, I only hope she engages in more live performance.
Although Shreya Goshal does not have a huge outreach to British audiences due to mainly singing in Hindi, Nepali, Bengali and more of her native languages yet I can highly recommend anybody with an interest in world music to go and see this delicate talent perform live. She is a huge name in Bollywood and should you have an interest in this genre of cinema it is likely that you will have heard one of Ghoshal's tracks in the soundtrack.
She has a really impressive vocal range, one that can be both emotive and powerful all at once without ever becoming overshadowed by the rich indian instruments. The two marry together well and create an overall experience of complete balance and harmony. She is incredibly humble between songs, thanking the audience sincerely for coming to see her show. She is considered to be one of India's most popular and successful recording artists, and is a credit to the genre of world music.
Fantastic performance in a great venue. Truely amazing evening. Shreya had a great collection of songs ranging from old Hindi movies to new ones.the only negative aspect I can come up with is the fact that the beer was too weak and a bit expensive for 5£'s a pint. But I guess you cannot have everything.....
