Biografia
The band came together as the result of two bands originally hailing from Pheonix, Arizona, United States relocating to San Francisco, California. The Beans and The Red, White and Blues arrived in San Francisco in 1969, and at first, both tried to make it on their own. However, the band members had been friends in high school, and as the years went by and success didn't seem to be calling them, the band joined together to become The Tubes in 1972. This rebranding also saw the band radically change up their performance style, adding elements of shock rock and performance art along with live satires of current political affairs and consumer culture. Almost overnight, The Beans and The Red, White and Blues became one of the most unmissable bands in California.
The band signed to A&M Records, and released their self-titled debut album in June 1975. While making a huge name for themselves on the West Coast, the band also began to blow up in the U.K, with arguably their signature song, the single “White Punks On Dope”, becoming a top thirty hit in the U.K and inspiring the title of an album by The Clash with the lyric “hang myself when I get enough rope”. Over the next couple of years, the band remained one of the most controversial cult acts around, to the extent that in 1977, they managed to sell out a week's worth of concerts at London's cavernous Hammersmith Odeon on sheer reputation alone, without a genuine hit record to their name.
With a band so visual, it makes sense that they would flourish in the 1980's, and in 1983 they had their biggest hit over a decade after they formed in the form of “She's a Beauty”, a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 that was accompanied by a video that was a huge hit on the nascent MTV station. Ever since then, the band have continued to release acclaimed albums and play live shows that more than live up to the multi-media chaos of their late 70's heyday. For remaining the kind of band that makes people want to start a movement to this very day, not just another band, The Tubes come highly recommended.

It's hard to believe that The Tubes started as a group of friends in High School looking at where they are today. Their first self titled album is one that I began listening to probably 25 years after it's release, but goodness me have I listened to it a lot! The guys are fantastic entertainers, and that something that you just don't get from the records, so when I first saw a live recording of them on YouTube, I just knew I had to go and experience it first hand.
The show I caught was a full 2 and a half hour set, but i'm pretty sure no one in the audience thought it felt that long. Fee is a great entertainer and kept the audience engaged with banter, costume changes, and choreography. The performance was visually stunning as well as musically, with flamboyant lighting and staging for the musicians to work around. As well as playing their classic hits, they took an obscure approach with new material, introducing elements of rap and experimental music. Whilst this isn't in keeping with their style, the way that they adapted the new material and created a crossover with their original tracks was brilliant.
The guys were great and stuck around for pictures and signings afterwards, which really made the evening extra special. Definitely a concert not to miss!
Saw the Tubes at the Canyon club in Agoura on Feb 2, 2019.AWESOME, fun show. The band is tight and Fee Waybill was funny and charming. Fee did a half dozen costume changes including his Quay Lewd character for White Punks On Dope. Glad to see the original guys in the band (4 out of 5)too. Roger Steen was amazing. They do their songs like you remember them. It was one of the best shows I've seen and I've seen everybody. I highly recommend seeing them. You won't be disappointed.
When I went to get my ticket info, I found out the concert had been rescheduled without any notification. They moved it to a date when I will be out of the area and impossible for me to go to the concert. Very disappointing as I love The Tubes and was really looking forward to seeing them. Hopefully I can get a refund or sell my tickets. They are front row!
