It would be easy to dismiss Badfinger as merely a Beatles rip-off. Comparisons between the two were bound to be inevitable, what with the band (under their previous name The Iveys) signing to Apple Records, Paul McCartney writing their first top 10 hit, "Come And Get It" and guitarist Joey Molland even writing a song called "Love Me Do" for 1970's album No Dice. Not to mention that Molland looks scarily like McCartney. This said, it is not the reason why myself and hundreds of fans gathered to see them. With albums like 'No Dice' and the recently released 'Straight Up,' Badfinger have escaped the shadow of the Beatles and established their own organic sound. It makes them one of the most exciting bands around, and dare I say, the next big thing?
As the lights dimmed four suited and booted boys walked on stage to rapturous applause. With no acknowledgement of the crowd, they went straight into "Better Days," a song taken from high charting 'No Dice.' Despite little subsequent interaction with the crowd, they seem very happy to be performing and thundered through a ten-song set. For me, highlights of the set came in the form of their hit singles: "No Matter What," a song with an infectious guitar riff and pitch perfect vocals from lead singer Pete Ham that had the crowd dancing and singing along, something that seemed to greatly please the band members on stage. For their set closer, they chose new song "Baby Blue," a beautiful song steeped in melancholy which is heavily emotive. It is a tender moment in the set. Ham and bassist Tom Evans certainly know how to nail a harmony. Despite being one of their hits they didn't play "Come And Get It." While slightly disappointed, it is further proof they've left that Beatles-esque sound behind for greener pastures that belong to them. A true delight to see live, I thoroughly recommend!
