Biografía
Julian Casablancas was born to Spanish American business mogul John Casablancas and former Danish model Jeanette Christiansen. Growing up in New York City, he met his future band mate, Albert Hammond Jr., at a boarding school in Switzerland, before meeting Nick Valensi and Fabrizio Moretti at another school in Manhattan, before developing extensive media hype leading up to their debut album release "Is This It" in 2001. The band went on to achieve great success and worldwide critical acclaim.
During an extended hiatus for The Strokes, Julian Casablancas embarked upon a solo career in 2009. He released the album "Phrazes For The Young" (November 2009) with the title being inspired by the Oscar Wilde book, "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young." The record was heavily influenced by new wave and electronica, with Casablancas using synthesisers for many of the songs. The album peaked at No. 35 in the US charts and No. 19 in the UK charts. In 2014 he released his new album "Tyranny" which featured his backing band The Voidz, which returned to more of the garage rock stylings that Casablancas is known for through his musical output with The Strokes. The album reached number two in the US Alt. Rock charts.
Alongside these releases, Casablancas has also collaborated with many artists, such as Queens of the Stone Age on their song "Sick, Sick, Sick," as well as Danger Mouse and Pharrell Williams. Casablancas' work with Daft Punk on their 2013 album "Random Access Memories" and the song "Instant Crush" earned him a Grammy Award.
As well as his own creative output, Casablancas is also responsible for establishing record label Cult Records, who have released albums by the likes of The Virgins, Karen O, Cerebral Ballzy and Albert Hammond Jr.
Críticas en vivo
To be honest, anyone who's going to see Julian Casablancas live is hoping for that raw, frenetic energy that you see when he perfoms with The Strokes.
Unfortunately, it would seem that he has a different agenda, and is looking to push the envelope as wide open as he can without tearing.
There is no doubting that this is a talented individual, and his back band, The Voidz, are also great in their respective fields.
The trouble is that more often then not, and certainly on this occasion, it appeared as though everyone had been told to play what they want, whenever they wanted.
It was quite apparent from the crowd that had gathered that they wanted some semblance of their favorite NYC indie rock band, and any allusion to that music was greeted with near hysteria.
Julian was working to a different tune though (quite literally) and this was reflected in the fact that this show was being played on a Sunday night in Elephant and Castle.
This isnt to say that it wasnt good. But this isnt to say it was great either.
Casablancas does have alot to say, but at times this gig came across as self indulgent and unrestrained, and even the most ardent fan would have felt jaded at times.
The trouble is, that when its good, its very good - and still 100% more interesting and original then most other acts out there today.
Julian Casablancas has taken on dozens of projects since he gained international fame as the lead singer of The Strokes in the late 90’s, and he definitely has not yet exhausted his talent or his creativity. As a multi-talented instrumentalist and talented singer/songwriter, he has been involved with a ton of acts from Pearl Jam to Daft Punk to, most recently, his own side project The Voidz. He is certainly an artist to be admired, and he always manages to take his talent full-throttle both off and on stage.
Julian’s voice is completely unique, so even when his band begins to rock out at a high volume, his voice is always distinguishable through the music, which I find is sometimes an issue with live rock shows. Julian is a bit shy and not big on banter between songs, but he captivates his audience just by being so visibly immersed in the music. He looks like a typical rock star with a soft edge, always sporting his signature shoulder-length black hair, tight brightly-colored pants, and, of course, a black leather jacket.
His live performances are always total rock-fests with fans moshing at the front and the crowd giving shouts of approval throughout the set. The shows are always decked out with neon spotlights, a sexually charged atmosphere, and good vibes.
