Biografía
Y’know, the early names of successful rock bands are always fascinating to see. Especially since oftentimes, they’re not really any worse than the one they settled on. Look at Monster Magnet for example, the band cycled through the likes of Dog of Mystery, Airport 75, Triple Bad Acid before settling on their current moniker.
Quite what made the band sit up and think “We’ve got it!” when they stumbled on the name Monster Magnet we may never know. However, you’ve got to be one hell of a band to make it with a name as ridiculous as theirs and twenty five years into their career, that’s exactly what they’ve proved themselves to be.
Frontman, singer guitarist and sole remaining founder of the band Dave Wyndorf put the band together in 1989. A power trio originally, he was joined by John McBain and Tim Cronin on guitar and drums respectively, and released the demo cassette “Forget About Life, I'm High on Dope”.
This introduced a lyrical theme that would follow them for the rest of their career. I’m sure you can figure out what that might be. However, soon after their debut album was released they went on tour supporting Seattle luminaries Soundgarden, and that was enough to secure them a major label deal with A&M Records.
However, bad luck still wasn’t far away as their first album with A&M, 1993’s “Superjudge” tanked. Unfortunately, their retro inspired riff based rock proved ridiculously unfashionable once the Grunge movement picked up steam and pretty much became the biggest youth movement in music.
As such the band struggled for mainstream success and recognition until 1995’s surprise hit album “Dopes To Infinity”. This album saved their careers and gave them a minor hit single in the form of Negasonic Teenage Warhead”. This was followed up by their breakthrough album, 1998’s “Powertrip”, their first and only album to be certified Gold.
Since then they’ve settled into their role of stoner rock elder statesmen extremely well, releasing a further six albums, touring incessantly and generally being one of the most truly influential bands in American alternative rock. They’re still at the top of their game, and live, they’re completely unmissable.

Monster Magnet really is cool and I just love their name. They are a bit hard core and make you think of the 80’s but their live shows always have sexy dancers, so who is complaining! They are definitely a throwback to the days of hair bands! They do a great job of getting their audience pumped up and excited and it’s not just the topless female dancers.
If you are embarrassed by nudity then these guys are not for you. They are really great though, and there is a dark side to them that is hypnotic. I am especially a fan of their song Monolithic. It takes me back to my high school days and smoking behind the school gym! These guys are really wild and their live shows don’t disappoint. Even though they are reminiscent of 80’s hair bands, they still manage to be different and cutting edge.
Most of their live shows have large audiences with many people smoking cigarettes and drinking. They are definitely a wild bunch, but that is to be expected for this type of music. If you can handle all the racy activities that take place during one of their concerts, you should definitely go see them at least once.
First off: The location was a good choice. But beware: it is very hot. Literally.
The first band played, called "Powder for Pigeons", was pretty astonishing. A female drummer, a male guitarist/singer and they were really great - but maybe they can try another singer?!
Next, Monster Magnet... and, yes, it was a bit like a time jump back in the early 2000s. Nothing seems to have changed: they have still the good, old, F*ck-you-attitude. The songs played were all pretty straight forward - no ballads, just pure psychodelic metal.
Thank you for the great gig ... and I am looking forward to the new album later this year.
Really great show by Dave, he put on a spirited performance in NYC at Gramercy Theater. He didn’t seem to care that the venue was small and not exactly packed either. I have been going to MM shows for a while and this was just as good as shows from 15+ years ago. The band is just awesome, but I do miss Ed Mundell on lead guitar. I don’t think they played more than 12 songs so that was a bummer. So glad MM stopped in NYC since he has been giving Europe a majority of his attention for touring. He is just starting to come back the US the last couple of years.
Possibly one of the best MM gigs I've been to! The venue was small, packed, VERY loud and sweaty and so good to see the band up close. They banged through songs from Spine of God, Superjudge, Dopes to Infinity, Powertrip, Last Patrol and the recent Mindfucker. Lightshow was heavy on the strobes, and some trippy projections. Wyndorf gave it everything as usual!
Show was awesome! I hadn't seen Monster Magnet since I was 18 (which was a long time ago!). Dave was still as amazing as ever. I was pretty impressed that he could still hit all the notes when they played some of their older stuff. They even broke out Spine of God! If you are thinking about going, run, don't walk, and get some freaking tickets!
Was rockin' good gig of Monster Magnet!
Monster Magnet put it's best foot forward!
With a great line-up and set!
Dave like in his best days.
Good sound also!
Better than they were the concert before in this club.
Great concert. A good mix of new stuff (Last Patrol, End of Time, Stay Tuned) and classics including Spine of God, Dopes to Infinit, Twin Earth and Spacelord. Over 1,5 hours of pure honest rock and roll!
Absolutely brilliant show and the bands were absolutely brilliant and mental and the crowd was loving every minute of it and monster magnet put on a fantastic show and one massive mushpit
Monster Magnet were as usual out of this world amazing and they never disappoint I would highly recommend them.
This was my teenagers first gig and they absolutely loved it.
