Biografía
Markie was born in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, US, but initiated his pursuit as a hip-hop artist on Long Island, New York during the start of the 80s. His style is just as likely to reflect the influence of comedians like Redd Foxx as it is funk legends such as James Brown, Bootsy Collins, and George Clinton and early beatmakers like Run-DMC and The Sugarhill Gang.
Markie commenced recording sessions on his studio debut “Goin’ Off” in 1986. The album was released in early 1988 and introduced the world to a new rap style that favored humor to self-seriousness and free-style beatboxing to contrived vocalizations. His follow up record “The Biz Never Sleeps” came out the next year and featured Markie’s most successful single of his career “Just a Friend”.
Markie’s 3rd studio album “I Need a Haircut” marked a turning point not only in his career, but for the entire landscape of hip-hop music. The album’s penultimate track “Alone Again”, was singled out by Gilbert O’Sullivan for copyright infringement. O’Sullivan filed a lawsuit and won the case against Markie for using this sample without permission. This act set a precedent, which required artists to get the songs they were to sample pre-approved by its copyright owner. The album while moderately successful did not reach its full commercial potential, as it was pulled from distribution on account of the lawsuit it incurred.
By the time Markie released his 4th studio album “All Samples Cleared”, his career was heading towards obscurity. Despite the setback caused by “Alone Again”, Markie had left a significant influence on rap culture.
His distinctive, observational and often hilarious style influenced rap artists ranging from self-conscious lyricists such as The Roots and Mos Def to irreverent jokesters like The Pharcyde and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The Beastie Boys were especially proponents of Biz Markie and invited him to guest on several of their albums including, “Check Your Head”, “Ill Communication”, “Hello Nasty”, and “The Sounds of Science”. These appearances put Markie back into the public’s eye; however, instead of reviving his career as a recording artist he decided to hone his chops as a DJ.
However Markie would eventually return back to the studios. In 2003 he released his 5th album (his first in 10 years) “Weekend Warrior”. The album came out through Tommy Boy Records and featured DJ Jazzy Jeff, P Diddy, and Erick Sermon and just two years after this release he put out a 14 track compilation album “Make the Music with Your, Mouth, Biz”, which was issued through the label Cold Chillin’.

There is very little Marcel Theo Hall has not tried and inevitably conquered. The musician better known as Biz Markie is known as a rapper, performer, beatboxer, comedian and actor with the latter two earning him the affection term of 'the clown prince of hip hop'.
He may not have released an album in over a decade yet fans still crowd the venues to watch him before as his music was so prolific during the late 80s and 90s. The nostalgic R & B and hip hop vibes have universal appeal and this is proved as Marcel steps out to stage and the whole room goes up with huge cheers and applause. A thick bass line kicks in from his excellent DJ and the figure of the business begins the show. At 50 years old, he still moves and attains a great deal of swagger as he knows the weight of his reputation through his heyday. A great range of fans are present tonight of seemingly all ages and they all know the undeniable tones of 'What Comes Around Goes Around' and 'The Vapors'. It is of course the huge hitter 'Just A Friend' that brings the show to a close and receives the biggest singalong of the night so far.
I saw Biz Markie perform live for the first time a few years ago and it was a very unique experience. He is a different kind of musician because he doesn’t just rap. He is also a popular comedian and has even been on a reality TV show.
When he performs as a musician he takes all this experience and incorporates it into his show. He has been performing for ages and is known for his song 'Just a Friend' which came out in 1989. This is when I first started listening to him. I was barely in high school but everybody was singing this song at school. I loved the song and became a longtime fan.
He performed this song when I saw him perform and the audience went crazy. Everybody was singing along and lovin’ it. Biz was very humble and of course spent some time talking to the audience and making jokes. The audience ate it up! He went on rapping and beatboxing and everybody was dancing around to his music. He is such a multi-talented artist that it is hard not to like this guy! I loved his live show and he does not disappoint that’s for sure!
