Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s has a diverse sound that allows them to produce pop songs that will get stuck in your head for days or play with a an intensity that will shake the venue where they are performing. The band’s performance strongly relies on their ability to accurately play their songs consisting of layers and layers of rich orchestral sounds. The band formulates dynamic sounds consisting of the soft strums of an acoustic guitar and the gentle bowing of a cello, as well as the loud, crunch of a distorted guitar and the booming sound of the drums. The band also manages to achieve a sense of ambience through their music by using such instruments as a slide guitar saturated in dense effects such as reverb. The lead singer Richard Edwards also provides a deep quality to the sound with his soft vocals brushing over the intricate soundscape that the band is producing.
Although the band has been known for their ornate, polyphonic sound that incorporates various instruments, they have managed to step back from this approach in recent years. More recent albums by Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s show the band heading in a more direct rock and roll delivery. Although the band has headed in a more direct rock sound, they still retain some elements of orchestrated sounds and still produce these sounds in their live performances. This diversity in their sound allows for an intriguing concert. At one moment in the show you might hear a soft, but elaborate song such as “Broadripple Is Burning” and at another moment you might hear a more enthralling and heavy rock song such as “Birds”.
Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s are well accomplished in their invigorating presentation of live music and seeing them live will surely prove why this band is so great and why the only direction they are headed is up.
