Biografía
Formed in 1981, Whodini became one of the first hip-hop groups to earn mainstream success and national radio air play. Arriving just after the likes of the Fat Boys and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the group signed with Jive Records in 1982. Comprised of lead-lyricist Jalil Hutchins, vocalist John Fletcher, and DJ Drew Carter, the group was managed by Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons and largely produced by Larry Smith. In 1983 Whodini released their eponymously-titled debut album “‘Whodini” led by the single “Haunted House of Rock”. Initially intended as an advertisement for radio DJ Mr. Magic, the group’s subsequent single “Magic’s Wand” received regular airplay and has been one of the group’s most sampled tracks.
The full-length “Escape” followed in 1984 featuring the singles “Five Minutes of Funk”, “The Freaks Come Out at Night”, and “Friends”. The record was later certified platinum and served as a revolutionary piece of hip hop culture for its unique urban narrative. A re-release of the album arrived in May 2011, its first time since 2002, featuring nine bonus tracks. The studio album “Back in Black” followed in 1986 supported by the singles “Funky Beat”, “I’m a Ho”, “Fugitive”, and “Last Night (I Had a Long Talk With…)”. Again distinguished by its radio-friendly, introspective storytelling, the record features Pendulum drummer Paul Kodish. In support of the release Whodini toured alongside Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J and the Fat Boys, played a host of national coliseums, and shows in UK and Europe.
Whodini’s subsequent release, 1987’s “Open Sesame” marked a move away from the playful beat and rhythms towards more instrument driven accompaniment. However, a year earlier this new school style was popularised on the multi-million selling albums by LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. Over the next few years whilst still under contract by Jive Records, Whodini’s output reduced to the occasional single including “Anyway I Gotta Swing It” from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. After signing with MCA Records in 1990, the group released their fifth full-length “Bag-a-Trix” in 1991. Unable to tap into the new rap market the album performed poorly, despite this Whodini issued their sixth studio album “Six” in 1996, led by the single “Keep Running Back”.

Although the hip hop group have been going since the early 80s, Whodini are still as talented and dedicated to their performance as ever. Seeing them live was awesome, knowing that they were one of the first groups to gain a national and international following as hip hop artists. They are also a great comedy act, and had us in the audience cheering and laughing along from the very start. They came out onstage accompanied by their DJ, and they did a little dance routine before they began their set.
The duo have a huge following, and everyone at the show seemed to know their music, new and old, and were rapping along to the tunes with the guys. They’ve also been involved with loads of samples and remixes, and played through a couple of those for us. They played a selection of tracks from their albums, such as Six, and Escape, my tow favourites, and they also played some material that I hadn’t heard before. They played a song that they said they’d only recently put together which was cool, hearing unreleased material is always exciting. Whodini have received multiple honorary titles and awards, and their still solid performance of original music today helps them maintain their incredible reputation and credibility.
The show was awesome!! I grew up listening to Whodini but never had the chance to see them in person. I know they're older now but they still brought the energy that I've always heard in their music. The blending of rap and r and b styles that they put together was unheard of at the time and has influenced many musicians to reach their dreams since. Whodini in my opinion are more than legends in the music industry;they're pioneers that should go down in history as one of the greatest group of musicians ever!!!
