Biography
Born as Courtney Michelle Harrison on 9 July 1964 in San Francisco, California and got her start in music in the 1980s first with the newly formed band, Sugar Babydoll, then joined the group Faith No More as their singer. After getting Faith No More, Love formed the group Pagan Babies and together they played several house shows and recorded one 4-track demo before disbanding in late 1985. Love then went on to move to various places and continued to be involved in music, as well as acting.
Having taught herself how to play the guitar, she moved to West Hollywood in 1989 with the intention of starting a new band. The new band, Hole, consisted of Eric Erlandson, Lisa Roberts, and Caroline Rue. The band released two singles, followed by their first album, “Pretty On The Inside,” which was released in 1991; after its release, the group gained a following. After the release of “Pretty on the Inside,” Love began dating Kurt Cobain and became pregnant, during which Hole recorded and released a cover of “Over The Edge” and a new single entitled “Beautiful Son.”
In October 1993 with a new lineup, Hole recorded their second album, “Live Through This,” which was a few days after the tragic death of Kobain. The album was met with critical acclaim and was certified platinum by 1995. After Hole's world tour concluded in 1996, Love made a return to acting and two years later released the album, “My Body, The Hand Grenade,” which was a compilation album. They also released an EP entitled “The First Session,” followed by their third album, “Celebrity Skin.” The band then set out on tour and then went dormant in the following two years, making an announcement in 2002 that they officially broke up.
With Hole no longer being a band, Love started a femme super group called Bastard during 2001; however, the group never went far. This prompted Love to pursue her solo career, and released “America’s Sweetheart” that sold 86,000 copies in its first three months. In 2006 Love recorded her second album, “How Dirty Girls Get Clean,” which chronicled her time getting clean in rehab. Technically released as a Hole album, Love released “Nobody’s Daughter” in 2010. Meanwhile Love also maintained an acting career and worked on an art career, debuting her collection in New York. In April 2014 Love released a single entitled “You Know My Name” and set out on tour with Lana Del Rey.
Live reviews
I am a huge fan of 90’s music. There are many bands I have seen perform live from that era. But, there are also many bands I missed out on for one reason or another. Hole is one of those bands. I won’t get a chance to see them perform, but I had a chance for the next best thing. Courtney Love was going to perform a solo show in my city. I knew I had to go. I was a huge fan of her when I was younger.I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the venue. It was a small club downtown. There was a surprising number of young people. I wondered if some of them were born when the name Courtney Love was first known. I let this thought leave my head, and decided to find my seat instead. The stage was kind of small. I wondered how Courtney Love would react to this. She was a big star by this point. Luckily, I did not have to wonder for long. Courtney took the stage and made a joke about the size of the stage. She then performed for nearly two hours. She did a mix of Hole songs and some of her later material. All of it was amazing. Overall, the concert was great. I hope to see her again if she returns to my area.
