Hopefully this’ll sum up everything you should know about David Eugene Edwards’ Denver, Colorado based folk rock project Wovenhand. They are unmistakeably a folk band but they were considered challenging enough and far enough out there to open for Prog Metal maniacs Tool, of all bands. However when one listens to them, it makes total sense. Wovenhand are a band that take the tropes connected with folk music, especially the dark side of old school Americana, and turn up the drama, menace and atmosphere all the way to twelve. Like if Ryan Adams and Tom Waits were the same person, and they were in a very, very bad mood. Of course, the best way to experience this is live. Where whatever the line-up, from a full band to Edwards on stage with nothing but a keyboard player backing him up, they’re all able to conjure up a dense, layered sound that can haunt you for days after you hear it. Edwards has the kind of chemistry that means that every line up he plays with feels like a natural extension of his music. Almost like each of them were born to play with him, and it’s in every raging, riotously noisy peak of the set and in every hushed moment of Edwards and a lone guitar, every moment feels spontaneous yet tight as a whip crack. Every time Wovenhand play, they’re creating something incredibly special, something that needs and deserves to be seen and heard by everyone with a taste for the dark side of music. Highly recommended.
Well, my wife and I never made it. I would have had to hang around after camping out, for 11 hours in Asheville. Another factor was that I'd not realized there was going to be a band before Wovenhand which would have put us home very late. I never like concerts that have warm up bands first without plenty of fair warning, which was NOT given in this case. Plus, while I love wovenhand's acoustic stuff my wife would probably not have appreciated if it had gone into full electric...even slightly. So, in summary, we didn't go, might have if there wasn't a startup band first.
Don't miss this band. David Eugene Edwards pours himself into the performance. There is a spiritual nature to the performance...and not due to the subject matter of most of his songs...but the atmosphere is intense. And overpowering. And if you are lucky, they will play a joy divison cover during the show...which in some ways, I think, is better than the original.
Loved it! Magical performance by the band! They sound a bit heavier now, mostly play the songs from the last three albums but they make it so that you don't feel nostalgic about their old stuff. If you can, go see them live! U
