Hailing from Connecticut, Hostage Calm are turning heads with their progressive brand of punk-rock. What makes their music so fresh is that they do not limit themselves to a standard punk sound, instead incorporating an eclectic mix of influences including latin rhythms, post-hardcore and post-punk to create something that is a bit out of the ordinary. So far they have released four albums, with the last being 2014's "Die on Stage."
As for their live show, it is relentlessly energetic and impassioned, making them a joy to se. Their performance at Chain Reaction in September this year was a blast right from the out, with Hostage Calm storming in to their set list with real immediacy, displaying how important it is for them to be performing in this band. Crunchy distorted guitars were driven by pummelling drum beats yet there were plenty of melodic breaks bringing respite to the ferocity of their songs. It was a dynamic performance that ebbed and flowed creating an emotive force which the audience certainly got behind. The band are quite vocal politically, taking particular efforts to promote LGBT equality, with their lyrics often of protest, such as 'Ballot/Stone" which attacks the previous ban on same-sex marriage. This political element adds further depth to their performance, as they are not just trying to make music, but music that means something and carries a message. Hostage Calm are energetic and passionate performers offering an enjoyable slab of punk rock that is worth a listen.
