British DJ-producer Scuba, who now resides in Berlin, is probably my favourite producer of house music. Scuba – aka Paul Rose – founded the incredibly cool dance label Hotflush Recordings (a label which has had a hand in breaking Mount Kimbie), but is best known for his Berlin nights at super club Berghain.
Although he’s been in Berlin since 2007, he is frequently over in the UK, especially during festival season. I have seen him live a handful of times, including an incredible DJ set at Worldwide Festival in France, where he dominated the main stage with a set of bass-driven, melodic techno.
Scuba has also starting touring with a neon light-laden live AV show, which probably best captures what he is about as a live performer. He is never in your face heavy, nor deep and minimal, but somewhere in between – a place of soulful, euphoric electronic music.
More recently I saw him smash out a summer house set at Lovebox in London, where he played in a weird little stage set up to look like a cottage during an afternoon of blazing hot sun. He dropped loads of classics and bouncy modern bangers, which had the sun-kissed ravers roaring in approval. In short: amazing.
