Beginning life in 1996, the band, led by Dick Valentine (Tyler Spencer, vocals) played regularly at Detroit clubs such as The Old Miami and Gold Dollar. The band split briefly before reuniting in 2001 to record and release their first version of "Danger! High Voltage."
But it was in 2003 where the song achieved huge success, reaching number two in the UK SIngles Chart. Their debut album, "Fire" was released the same peaking at number seven in the UK and number five in the US Dance charts. The song, "Gay Bar" was also another hit, reaching number five in the UK. Their third single "Dance Commander" also entered the top 40 in the UK, making it the third consecutive single to do so.
Following several tours and lineup changes, the band returned with "Señor Smoke" (2005), which featured the controversial cover of Queen's "Radio Ga Ga," with Dick Valentine dressing up as Freddie Mercury's ghost for the video. Electric Six have gone on to release six more albums, not achieving the same chart successes before, releasing them all on Metropolis Records.

Valentine, the primary songwriter, has said that his influences include Freddie Mercury, Talking Heads, Devo and Captain Beefheart. They are known for their glam-influenced live shows, often providing an incendiary performance through the wild behaviour of the lead singer Valentine.
The lyrics are insane. Dick Valentine is certainly insane and a little bit sinister. He maintained the persona right through the show until just before he walked off the stage when he shouted at someone in the audience "You're a fucking idiot!". But maybe that was part of the show? Early on he directed his narrowed eyes at someone else and said, "I see you, fucker." I think that was definitely part of the show. The whole show was energetic, musically tight and it drove the crowd into a frenzy. It was also hilarious. I didn't believe him when he said the floor had been sanitised with a polymer dust so we could sit down, or when he said we should come along to Birmingham because "it don't cost nothing". I don't know if any of the girls from the audience took up his offer of getting into their van and travelling to Birmingham with them overnight. It was great. I loved it. Andy D was pretty amazing too. I saw some things I wish I could unsee...
