Sinkane is an ingenious blender of musical patterns from varying points and eras around the globe. He’s got the big-league backing of the highly-esteemed DFA label, the baby of James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem fame, bumping shoulders with other DFA notables Arcade Fire, Hot Chip, Juan Maclean, Factory Floor and The Rapture. He patters out mid-tempo afro-jazz rythyms, with louche funk licks and wah-wah hooks, with the brash finish of Sudanese pop. There are vicissitudes into bossanova, quasi-Americana country and blues, Caribbean roots and rocksteady tasties. The whirlwind tour back and forth across the Atlantic and up and down the continents gets the sparkling DFA electro finish, with wavering keyboards, loops and modulated backing tracks.
He has sessioned with the likes of Caribou, Yeasayer, Born Ruffians and Of Montreal, and his latest LP, Mean Love, expounds his worldly presence. It’s a much more musically diverse album than the driving-hard afro-funk of 2012’s Mars, taking time to explore its host of subgenres in each track.
His band plays a very tight live set. They’re all on point and have remarkable energy while Sinkane charms the crowd with his soaring vocals.
