The Kentucky-native Caleb Cornett was born and raised in Morehead, however now resides in Louisville, Kentucky. The electronic artist made his debut with the “WHY EP” in 2010, which features the singles “In Love” and “Why You Look So Blue”. Guided by its heavy-hitting beat and piano accompaniment, the record paved the way for Amtrac’s subsequent EP “Emergency” in 2011. Featuring the singles “Emergency”, “Feel Good”, and “Overtime”, the “Emergency” EP showcased Amtrac’s development and club-friendly vibe.
The producer and DJ earned his big break later in 2011 with the release of his single/video “Came Along”. Debuted on MTV’s “Clubland” in October 2011, the record balances club-accessible electronic pop with experimental soundscapes that combine to create a sublime late summer soundtrack. The full-length “Came Along” followed spawning the subsequent tracks “Fame or Shame?”, “Imprint”, and “Heart’s Not Made of Gold”. An EP of “Came Along” remixes appeared in 2013 featuring a remix by Amtrac himself and fellow DJ Takashi Fujimori.
On top of his own material releases Amtrac has crafted a prodigious amount of remixes for other artists including Treasure Fingers, Alesso, Two Door Cinema club, Kill the Noise, and Ellis Goulding. In June 2014 Amtrak issued the EP “Undefeated / Primal”, complete with addictive beats, seductive vocals, and an easy-listening aesthetic. The singles “Yep” featuring Kaskade and “Hyperspace” featuring Kastle, followed later in 2014, ahead of his official single “Those Days” released in September 2014.
Watching a DJ live is awesome, it’s a great way to enjoy dancing to your favourite music, and seeing them get really into their tracks is awesome. Amtrac however, takes his DJing to the next level by providing live vocals and instrumentals over his DJing. His booth had behind it a synth, a sample pad, a microphone, and an electric guitar, and I was immediately super excited to see what he was about to do for us.
He opened with his remix of Kaskade’s single Atmosphere, and played his synth over the top, distorting the sound and adding another level of music to the track. It was awesome to hear him improvise in ways that aren’t on his studio albums, and it was incredible to see his talent first hand. About half way through the show, he picked up his microphone, and sang some of his own vocal sections over his mixes – some original vocals, and some covers, as if creating his own samples.
From start to finish he had the audience on his side singing and dancing along, and his incredible and original performance seemed to blow everyone away.
