As a fan of punk rock, I'm always down to have a good time when it comes to concerts. However, few concerts provide the perfect blend of fun and punk that a performance by The Queers does.
The Queers' music, like a lot of punk rock, is truly just about having a good old wild time. When I saw them in Detroit, the audience around me certainly understood this, as well, joyously and riotously revelling when the band announced songs like "I Didn't Puke," "Brush Your Teeth," and "I Want C**t." When the latter was announced, one of the more inebriated members of the crowd to my left shouted, "Who doesn't?!" much to the enjoyment of the other members of the crowd around us. I, myself, laughed out loud because that's absolutely the type of fun-loving environment I'd expect at a wild concert such as The Queers.
"This Place Sucks," the last song in their set, felt especially appropriate to me, seeing as the song was being played as the final one in a set being performed in Detroit, Michigan. However, none of the audience members were offended, which didn't surprise me; after all, they are fans of The Queers. Instead, the cheering and clapping was extra uproarious, with members whistling and jumping up and down in appreciation.
This was the second opportunity I've had to see the legendary Queers. The first time, I was in the balcony of the Gothic Theater. It was a great show and a great experience. This time around, the venue was the much smaller Black Sheep.
Given the venue and my affinity for the band, I chose to stand right up front for the Queers. I was nailed from behind by the circle pit numerous times, got beer spilled on me, and was blasted by way too many decibels...it was the BEST time!!
Seriously, I've attended a TON of shows...this was among the best I've been to, ever! The extremely stellar opening acts (the Sleights, the Roxy Suicide, and the Nobodys) certainly contributed to the overall greatness of the show. This was probably the best 12 bucks I've spent.
I highly recommend checking out the Queers if you get the chance. They are really friendly dudes and they give an honest effort. There were maybe 200 people in attendance in a small venue. I believe the performance we were treated to was just as good (arguably better) as if it was a sold out show in a 15,000 seat venue. As always, the Queers are just interested in having fun and pleasing their fans.
Awesome super tight show...The Queers played all their hits in super fast Ramones style...no dicking around...just pure "Punk Ŕock" at it's best.
Don't miss The Queers if they come to your town...they are a definite must see.
I was really excited to finally see the queers in new Orleans but they cancelled the show the day before for basically no reason. It was really disappointing and I'm sure they won't be back any time soon.
