16 years is a long time to be out of the performance loop. Too long some would say. There were whispers before Gavin Friday’s return to the stage that he had been absent for too long, and would no longer have what it takes to perform in the same way. However, these rumours were quickly stamped on as Friday lit up venue after venue as if he had never left.
The 54 year old who hails from Dublin swanned onto the stage with the confidence of his 30 year old self. He thanked the audience graciously for coming, and picked up his microphone as if he has never been away. His artistic flare was ever present, and his confidence and dedication to every note was simply astounding. Gavin is a real artist, not simply a fabricated product of the music industry. His songs are raw and true, and that is what adds to their beauty.
Hearing him speak about his time away and how he never left the music dormant was a great insight to his hiatus and personal life since his days of fame and success. It would be great if he were to write an entire new album. Hearing the old classics and a couple of newer songs showed us that although his style has remained, some of his attitudes have adapted and matured. I am confident he could make a smashing new album.
