Leaving a band to pursue a solo career is for many a career-devastating move. Yet it is testament to the talent of Tim Finn that he has achieved more success as a solo artist than he did as front man of Split Enz.
His rock roots are still evident in his live sound, reinforced by the presence of a full band, however the Tim Finn is at his best when he is accompanied by just an acoustic guitar showcasing his more country influenced solo style.
It is at this point in the set that you could hear a pin drop in the room, as the silent audience is captivated by the melodic combination of guitar and voice. Often singing with his eyes shut and clearly so engrossed in his music, you cannot help but feel an emotional connection with Tim Finn and others in the crowd, as he shares stories of love and heartbreak, happiness and sorrow, old and new songs. It was the 2010 gig at London’s Scala that sealed the deal for me. Two encores. It may just be me but very rarely have I witnessed an artist do two encores. Definitely recommended.
