Seeing JD Souther at The City WInery in Chicago on December 7, 2015, was a truly memorable evening. I just discovered who he was that day and realized I was already a fan of his songwriting. The venue and the food were superb, and getting to know this legendary artist was such a fulfilling experience. He looks fantastic and retains the relaxed honesty and humor of the magical time long ago when we became the generation of "beautiful people" and music, art, intellectualism, spirituality, love, and brotherhood flourished.
I loved every song and vowed to buy his latest album and look further into the life of this most important minstrel. That night at home I got into YouTube videos of JD playing throughout the decades. Then I read an interview with him and discovered his amazing literary background and that he truly has the heart of a poet. What an inspiration!
I highly recommend seeing JD Souther live, because he truly communicates, and he embraces his connection with the audience. It is intimate, like seeing an old friend. It is magical, because he is a true artist, communicating from the heart.
Thank you, JD!
J.D Souther, who hails from Detroit, Michigan, is a singer-songwriter and actor, who has been a master of his trade for the best part of forty years now. He has written many hit songs recorded by artists such as the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt.
Tonight it is all about a small handful of his own singles and a couple that he co-wrote with some other big names such as James Taylor. He performs “Her Town Too” a song that tells a story from the start to finish, drawing anyone in who gives it a second of their attention. He also performs “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win” which was originally performed by Linda Ronstadt, but his rendition is equally as good, quite different to the original but captivating nonetheless. He rounds of his set with his song “You’re Only Lonely”, which in fact made it to number 7 in the US and number one in the US Acoustic chart back in 1979.
The 60’s 70’s and 80’s music scene has no better historical story teller than J.D. Souther His recollection about events of the time are so vivid and rich with detail. This makes the songs inspired by the stories he tells so moving. He is raw, real, and funnny! He told some chatty people in our theater to STFU and the crowd roared. It was awesome. Read the book Laurel Canyon by Michael Walker and this show will give you so much more context.
The Infinity venue is cozy and it sort of suited JD's performance that cool night. Liked his performance, low-key, easy feeling - nice little stories. Only wished he sang a few more of his hits. His steel-gray Canali suit matched the mood of my martini; a little sophisticated mellowness.
Very nice and accommodating of him to sign the CDs; and wow, he got my name right.
Have been a JD Souther fan since the late 1970's. His mellow songs & music have always comforted me in life. One of the many songs that I love is "You're Only Lonely" & I continue to listen to him. His concerts in small venues are very personal & intimate which mean a lot to his fans. Thank you John David for continuing to write great music!
Enjoyed show. Great blend of music and storytelling. However, we would have preferred more old songs and not share the night with other un-announced artist. As talented as she is her genre of music is not a favorite of mine.
Bull Run's food, atmosphere and wait staff were all fabulous. Will definitely return for that yummy prime rib.
