Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes played a rollicking show at the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, April 26. The show got off to an awkward start as Johnny looked at the set list and exclaimed, “This is wrong!” He wanted to start the show with Take It Inside, so he ignored the set list and got the band to play that tune from the 1990 Epic release Hearts Of Stone.
The Jukes explored their blues roots with a request based on someone in the crowd yelling, “Chicago!!!!” This caused Johnny to hum a few bars and said to the band, “Gimme something like bahn-bahmp-bah” which they morphed from that starting point into a tune by blues legends and 2015 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The band and the Miami Horns sounded great and rocked the audience while Johnny’s harmonica wailed on throughout the set.
The Jukes played classics like Trapped Again, Talk To Me and The Fever and also took other requests from the audience that included Stagger Lee and Hearts Of Stone. There were a couple of times when someone shouted out a request and Southside said, “We already played that!” in between songs, Johnny told the crowd that backstage in the Parker Playhouse were autographed pictures of stars of days past including Mickey Rooney and others.
Southside and the Jukes were at their best when they closed on the show with the crowd-favorite Havin' A Party which stirred memories of the Jersey Shore itself.
Terrific as always! Enjoyed the show. Good music, great performance and a happy and funkoving atmosphere. A bit of the blues-brothers, live in your 'backyard'. Nice songs by e.g. Tom Waits, Steven van Zandt en of course The Boss (Sherry Darling). See y'all next time around!
A 105 minute party...start to finish.
I never miss Southside when he comes around...if you've already seen him, you know what I mean. If you haven't...you need to.
This was my 19th show since 1976...He never get old.
Incredible show! Covered all the greatest from the first three albums and some other treasures from Better Days and more. Over 2 hours total - could not have asked for more. Thanks for coming to Charlotte Southside!!!
Amazing band and an amazing night, I would always recommend anyone to see this band whenever they're over here. I have seen them on most of their UK shows and most of their UK tours since 1990!!!
