You’d probably be forgiven for not having an encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of gypsy punk; after all, it’s hardly the most mainstream of genres. In truth, though, it’s difficult to know if that’s even the most appropriate tag to apply to Gogol Bordello; they certainly take plenty of influence from gypsy music, not least through their incorporation of the accordion and the violin, and the energy that they pour into their live shows and rigid adherence to their own aesthetic means they have the punk side taken care of, too. It’s just that Gogol Bordello, often, feel utterly uncategorizable.
Led by irrepressible frontman Eugene Hutz, Gogol Bordello had slowly begun to carve out an underground reputation for themselves by the mid-noughties, mainly thanks to their raucous gigs and apparently never-ending touring schedules. Rapturous critical acclaim for their fourth album, though – 2005’s ‘Gypsy Punks: Underground World Strike’, as well as a series of incendiary television appearances helped expose them to a wider audience; in terms of the latter, a riotous rendition of ‘Not a Crime’ on Later…with Jools Holland was surely the highlight. Since then, they’ve been staples of the European and North American festival circuits, and they recorded a song for Coca-Cola’s Euro 2012 advertising campaign, entitled ‘Let’s Go Crazy’.

Gogol Bordello is one of those bands that you have to see live, even if you aren't really into the gypsy punk style of music. They have been absolutely destroying the scene since 1999, and bring one of the liveliest and intense shows to the stage of the genre.
In recent years, with their popularity rising, they have been playing larger venues and festivals, but can still be found in your local venue playing an intimate and astonishingly fun live show. The venue I saw them in was a smaller one, holding about 500 - 1000 fans who were very energetic leading up to the main act. When Gogol hit the stage there was a rush to the stage and ear scorching cheers waiting for them to start their set.
The boys from the Lower East Side are not shy on stage, and frequently came into the crowd to interact with their fans. If you're shy around sweaty, greasy gypsies then you might feel more comfortable on the sidelines enjoying the music. There will be moshing and crowd surfing, so be prepared to be bumped and jostled in the crowd.
If you're familiar with the punk scene, you'll know how intense the mosh pits can get, and Gogol Bordello is no exception.I would see these guys every time they came to town if I could, the sheer exuberance on stage guarantees you're going to have an amazing time at their shows.
The bands lead singer, Eugene Hütz, is one of the most engaging and energetic performers I've seen in recent years. I was astounded by his commitment to his fans, and ensuring that everyone has a fantastic time at a Gogol Bordello show. He truly loves his art, and it's readily apparent every time he takes the stage, or comes into the crowd -- huge grin and constant movement.I recommend checking them out any time you're given the chance. It's nearly impossible to regret the choice to see Gogol Bordello live, at least once in your life.
Gogol Bordello knows how to make you dance! This is a concert where you need to stretch after it is over, LOL. Even though they had been playing for days, they came out strong and energetic and made the crowd go insane. It was so much fun! I especially remember the moment when they sang "Carnavalito humahuaqueño", making the South American public holler (I was one of them). I love gypsy punk, and I love Gogol Bordello and it's perfect mix of Latin, Balkan, and world music. The venue was impecable: great sound, acoustics, logistics, no lines for the bar or the restrooms, and lots of nice people working there. Nothing to do with the rude NYC bouncers! I am more than willing to continue attending all the good rock n roll concerts Capitol Theatre has to offer (even if I have to ride 1.5 hours in train to do so).
The third time we've seen them and it was a great pleasure to see the 20th Anniversary tour.
As always, they were brilliant! we go to a fair few concerts every year and I've been to a lot of shows and I think they are probably the best live band in ON EARTH! And there records are great too. Eugene is a true force of nature and a real talent with an authenticity sorely lacking these days. The music is great, great musicians. The atmosphere is so fun and positive. You're must see them.
As always, it was a wild party. Having taken their time to appear on stage, we were then offered 2 solid hours of pure entertainment. Old beloved hits like "start wearing purple" were performed along with lots of stuff from their newest album. One of the last songs, as is often the case, was "alcohol", which everybody demanded from the group. Hardly anybody stood still, everybody left the concert as happier people.
Gogol Bordello is a band that loves what they do and it shows up in every aspect of how they play it. The entire act is unmarred, pure alcohol-fueled gypsy-punk enthusiasm. Smiles all around. Five song encore on a fifteen song set. No rests or stops. Dancing. Jesting. It's one of the most straightforward and enjoyable concert experiences I've ever had, I got exactly what I paid and hoped for.
It was a great concert, full of energy!.. Very good stage presence... And, the sound was good, witch makes a big difference... Gogols are much better live than recorded...
Good choice of opening bands (well suited)... The venue's a bit "upper class" for the type of music... and drinks & food were not easy to get hold of... All in all a great evening!... Pierre
I heard a guy in the crowd say, "Last time I saw this band, I thought I was going to die - but I knew I would die happy"... this sums up how the concert was. You leave exhausted, sweaty, and in a daze from the endless, snarling enthusiasm of the band. Their recorded sound translates fantastically to the stage - perfectly abrasive and such a spectacle.
I see these guys as often as I can. They are always high energy, full of passion and the joy of what they do best. Never a bad show!
And at an intimate venue like Mr. Smalls it's even better, more personal, more of a community vibe.
Amazing show, incredible performance. As expected.
Great show at the Commodore in Vancouver. These guys never disappoint. Incredible energy. I see them every time they come. Highly recommended. Apparently for some strange reasons, reviews on Songkick have to be at least 30 words long so I have added this last sentence!
No one in this Universe puts on a better show than GOGOL BORDELLO. That is a fact. You will exude the most energy you possibly could, you will sweat like never before. They are incredible. Every other band could learn a LOT from Gogol.
