The Stabat Mater sets to music a 13th-century poem describing Mary standing at the foot of the cross. This text, of rare emotional intensity, has inspired some of the greatest composers in history. Each version offers a different interpretation: baroque and heart-wrenching in Pergolesi's, intimate in Vivaldi's, modern and introspective in Poulenc's. Beyond the sacred, the Stabat Mater touches on the universal: loss, love, compassion, and resilience.
The program for this concert, performed by countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and soprano Gwendoline Blondeel, explores the voice as an expression of the soul and its passions. The program will include Vivaldi's In furore and Nisi Dominus, culminating in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater masterpieces, accompanied by the orchestra Les Accents.
