Deer Tick originally began as a project for singer-songwriter John McCauley to showcase his work. Forming in 2004, the first three years of Deer Tick saw a constantly changing set of faces before McCauley decided to solidify the band by bringing on childhood friends Chris Ryan and Dennis Ryan. The band worked as a trio for a while, but 2009 saw the introduction of Ian O’Neil and 2010 saw the arrival of Robert Cromwell. These gradual injections of new talent have ensured that the band’s sound has remained fresh and interesting throughout their career.
The band is signed to Partisan Records and they have released five albums with the label. The band’s debut album “War Elephant”, which was released in 2007, received critical acclaim from multiple sources including Rolling Stone Magazine. The band’s other four albums, “Born on Flag Day”, “The Black Dirt Sessions”, “Divine Providence” and “Negativity” have all done similarly well with critics and fans alike. In each album, the band has continued to evolve and expand upon its style, which has proved successful in constantly attracting new fans and challenging it’s existing ones.
The band has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. They are known for their intense and memorable shows that go all out with sound and power. While often described as folk rock musicians, the band have noted that they dislike this categorisation. As such, their later work has focussed more on the noisy, boisterous rock Deer Tick loves so much.
Deer Tick knows how to blend a wide variety of musical styles and come out playing their own brand of rockabilly-psychedelic music. Their songs are short, but sweet, and the band performs their songs with a great sense of fun and excitement. The guitarists, John McCauley and Ian O’Neil, usually play on their Fender guitars getting that high-pitch treble slap that is prominent in most rockabilly music. Lead singer, John McCauley, also will play his acoustic guitar for his softer ballads and at times he comes close to producing sounds that you might hear from Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde album. Their bass player will sometimes play an upright bass to attain sounds that are reminiscent of the bluegrass genre. He will play the upright bass by plucking the strings with his hand during fast rhythms and at other times he will use the bow to create a deep sounding resonance. Deer Tick will also use an organ to create a fuller, soulful sound to the music. Deer Tick will also incorporate punk styles into their performance playing their guitars in a distorted, fast pace manner. John will also sing with a raspy voice reminiscent of such grunge singers as Kurt Cobain. In fact they have been known to play tribute shows to Nirvana when they tour under the name, Deervana. Their shows have minimal stage theatrics, except for a large light-up sign that says “Deer Tick” hanging behind them when they perform live. Although they have minimal stage theatrics, it is totally fine. Every one in the audience is focused on Deer Tick’s intense performance, and elaborate theatrics would just take away from their awe-inspiring music. Deer Tick will most likely play most of their hits that all the fans want to hear as well as throwing in some cover songs of such bands as Hank Williams, John Prine, or the Replacements. The audience will sure to have a great time jiving to Deer Tick’s unique blend of music.
