Biography
When the band formed in the early 1970s, little did they know they would set the standard for hard rock bands that trailed. Many of the biggest acts of the ’80s became a popular opening for headliners Y&T—and cut their teeth on the band, as evidenced by the Y&T mentions in tell-all books by acts such as Metallica and Mötley Crüe.
Born in Oakland, California, Y&T is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s own innovators of the hard rock sound. Whether performing to a festival crowd of fifty-thousand or in an intimate nightclub, Y&T’s high-energy set and passionate performances still captivate legions of fans around the globe, proving Y&T’s music timeless.
Originally formed as Yesterday and Today, the initial powerhouse quartet—featuring Dave Meniketti (lead guitar/lead vocals), Phil Kennemore (bass), Leonard Haze (drums), and Joey Alves (rhythm guitar)—tore through the ’70s and ’80s with their own brand of hard rock. After two ’70s albums on London Records, they shortened their name to Y&T and released eight albums on A&M in the ’80s. Two more albums with Geffen Records marked an era of change with Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth) on drums and Stef Burns (Alice Cooper, Berlin, Huey Lewis) on guitar.
With a discography of 18 albums, three greatest hits collections, plus a boxed set, Y&T has sold over four million albums since their 1974 inception. The band’s most recent single I’m Coming Home has climbed to roughly 1.5 million views on YouTube. Y&T received extensive airplay with hits such as Forever, Rescue Me, Mean Streak, Don’t Stop Runnin’, and Summertime Girls—which played in heavy rotation on MTV. Y&T songs have been featured in a multitude of movies and television shows, including Real Genius, Out of Bounds, Baywatch, and Hunter. After five top 100 albums, songs that tipped into the 40s, two Bammie Awards, and many international television appearances, Y&T’s hits are still played on VH1 Classic and classic rock radio stations worldwide.
With the passing of Kennemore, Haze, and Alves, it’s Meniketti who carries on the legacy that is Y&T. Y&T continues to tour the world, featuring the dynamic original frontman Dave Meniketti (lead guitar/lead vocals), John Nymann (guitar/vocals), Aaron Leigh (bass/vocals), and Mike Vanderhule (drums/vocals), playing songs that span the band’s five-decade career and including all the hits and fan favorites. Prepare to have your face melted.
Live reviews
Wow!Great show .... as always. From the opening local band, Killer Bee, with the lead singer reaping nothing but praise about how nice the members of Y&T are....to the band, Breaker Breaker, that had energy beyond all get out and the humility to thank everyone personally who told them how AWESOME they rocked it, their set was amazing. They only added to the energy that the headliner, Y&T brought to the celebration of my brother Jimmy' s 50th bday.
Aaron Leigh's addition to the band provided a hard and heavy pace to the already rockin' band. He was slapping that 1st string with vigor.
It's great that Dave plays the lead, but we can see why he has John Nymann is his right hand man. He added pure genius and precision to his own leads and rhythm all night! Plus all he does is smile.
What can I say about Mike Vanderhule? Drum solo...drumsolo...drum solo. This guy is an artist with his sticks..painting a picture with them (i know, cheesy, but sounded good at the time). He has to be one of the best out there that is at the top.
Dave Meneketti is a rock god . He has always put HEART and soul into playing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think his favorite song is ; I BELIEVE IN YOU. He is spot on with his leads...He makes me, and I hope others in Portland like this is his favorite place to play. That's what rock is all about!
So for you rockers who missed out on this bandd show when they came to town, make it next time! Because it's been proven, Y&T is here to stay for some time!!!

A good crowd and great atmosphere for the near annual return to Glasgow of Y&T.
Dave and the band as ever put on a tremendous show with a great set list and played for over 2 hours with hardly a break between songs.
Only gripe, which in fact was a major frustration to me all gig, was that Dave's mic and guitar sound were too low in the mix and therefore his excellence was somewhat lost. As he is the main man and who we are all there to see and hear, this was a big let down imho, especially as I asked twice for messages saying such to be passed back to the sound guy to do something about it. Rock City Promo guy - dont know if he bothered but defo the security guy went upstairs to pass on the message, but without any noticeable difference. Surely a sound guy sitting in the balcony cannot be hearing the same as the crowd on the floor and so should be interested to hear what the crowd feedback is and to perhaps come down and hear for himself?? The kicker was that the sound was actually very good, each instrument could be clearly heard without distortion (Johhny Nymen sounded superb!!) - but Dave was too low to hear clearly. What a shame!
Still best gig of the year for me despite that, even my air guitar got an airing!
See you next year Dave and gang!!
Went to the show Sunday March 3, 2019 here in Raleigh NC. AWESOME SHOW! Highly recommend seeing the band in these small venues. Beats sitting in the nose bleed seats of a stadium, like back in the day.
I started to follow Y&T in 1980 and have been a fan ever since. They are my favorite band of all time. Their songs are made up of lyrics and music that just FIT PERFECTLY. You can feel the emotion in the guitar playing and know that Dave is feeling it every time he plays the song.
I was somewhat surprised (and happy) that Dave's voice has held up so well over the years. Other lead singers have lost much more of their natural talent from the early days of Big Hair. Dave has not lost much and the concert was just incredible.
45 YEARS!!!!!!!!! What an accomplishment.
If you know someone that loves 80's metal and hasn't listened to Y&T, you need to help them out. Why Y&T never made it to the top after bands like Dokken Motley Crue and Poison all did, I AM SURE I WILL NEVER KNOW. All those bands owe Y&T a debt of blazing the trail for them. Just a little ahead of their time, I guess.
So much heart and soul in the music. Could not have made it through my teenaged years without Y&T.
Thanks Guys!
Tim
This was the second time I got to see them in less than a year, once in London, UK, and last night in Corona Ca. I've been a fan of these guys since I was a kid. And they still manage to deliver the goods for sure. Dave Meniketti is just a fantastic guitar player, and vocally he sounds just as great as he always has. Even in the ridiculously hot and humid club. The rest of the guys sounded amazing as well, from their playing to their perfect backing vocals,it was great. The band is always all about giving the crowd what they want to hear, and they definitely didn't disappoint. Classic anthems like Mean Streak, and Contagious, songs like All American Boy, Armed and Dangerous, Hell or Highwater, and they played two of my favorites, Midnight in Tokyo and Forever. They kept the crowd energy high, and we were all singing along. They even hung out for a bit afterward to meet and chat with the fans. If you're in any way a fan of these guys, their live show is definitely worth catching.
Hard-Rock at its finest .
Although the show started with some delay public got fully compensated for that.
The setlist was similiar to the performance at Seemed they let oput some songs.
The opening track Hurricane made clear what public could expect.
Pure passion for Rock and Metal at a high level . Unfortunately the sound was misconfigured, Dave had to sing against the drums and the guitars .
But he did not try - good for his voice!
Fast tracks with virtous guitar riff's
where either Dave or John inserted the lead guitar changed with bluesy tracks with virtous riffs where Clapton could learn from . . . -
No "hits" like Rescue Me, Coming Home,Mean strek and I believe in you were left out .
And who knew the heavy Metal-version of Summertime girls ?
The whole show was a total blast. What Black Sabbath promises with their "Rock'n'roll-Doctor" Y&T blows you away for 2 hours (incl.encores!) closing with a hymn to the fans : forever .
Y & T have been a band for almost thirty years but are still going to this day. They are definitely one of those bands that straight up refused to transcend. I mean, can you imagine if Bon Jovi still had huge blonde hair and sang with the biggest screaming vocals? Nope, me neither. To be fair though, I could maybe be swayed to go and see this band again as they still perform with such virtuosic qualities, Dace Meniketti has such a technically fantastic voice singing in the upper register of his tenor range! I know, wild. The guitar solos are fast, with lots of tapping and pinch harmonics, each one better than the last. They finish their set with the mammoth riffage of “Don’t Bring Me Down”. The audience sing throughout the song, as loud as they can with their fists and horns in the air pumping along to every syllable sang. I definitely feel as though I am in a time warp and have gone back to the mid 80’s to watch a metal band.
I've followed Y&T for 35 years since I saw them as a 16 year old in the early 80's. I instantly loved their music and thought that Dave Meniketti was a guitar genius. I've followed them ever since and still listen to their stuff and since they started coming back to the UK a few years ago I've tried to catch every tour. This show was at Fibbers in York which holds maybe 500 which makes it brilliant for getting up close to the band. They came on at 8:30 and went off at 10:30 (breaking the curfew, very rock 'n roll) having played over 20 songs and I never once looked at my watch during the set. All the classics were in there and sounded great. The old vocal range isn't quite what it was but Dave still sounded good and his playing is still exquisite. Didn't want the evening to end. It was brilliant.
I have to say, that for my first Concert for the 2016 season was AWESOME! Y&T rocked us with 20 songs! They played most of there hits and also played some songs that they have never played LIVE before! The whole band looked great, and you could tell that the band was happy to be there! The Sound system was dialed in for the band quite well I must add! But most of all was the Tracy, California Venue where I saw them at! Top notch place to see a show! I sat in the 2nd row and Dave was probably 15 feet in front of me singing and playing guitar to all his songs!!!It was one of my personal best Y&T shows that I HAVE EVER SEEN!!
Show was exciting, songs were awesome! Y&T delivers on every song. Dave Meneketti's voice is still strong and he delivers on every song. I've been a fan of theirs for a long time. I saw some really young fans in the audience and was surprised that they would even know who this band is. Just proves that great music and great songs attract fans of all ages. I would recommend to anyone to listen to and appreciate this great music and the musicianship that Dave and the band bring to their shows. Loved it! One of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of the genre.
As usual, They "ROCKED". It was GREAT being able to stand next to the stage for the whole concert. I really Love their older music, but, I really liked their new ones. It was so easy to get tickets. I got a reminder about when and where it was on facebook. The rest is history. When they come back, I am definitely gonna be right next to the stage again. I even got one of my own T-shirts that I brought with me signed by Dave & John. HURRY BACK Y&T. My brothers and I have been following their career since they started back in the late 70s early 80s.
