Biography
Dan Croll developed his musical talents whilst studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, an institute founded by Sir Paul McCartney. Whilst studying at the school, Croll proved himself a worthy musician, winning the 'National Songwriter of the Year' award from the Musicians' Benevolent Fund.
Having graduated, Croll signed to Turn First Records in 2012, releasing his debut single through the label in September 2012, as a digital download and limited 7". "From Nowhere" became a popular track on the internet, spending three days at the top of Hype Machine's popular chart. The track's popularity was bolstered by regularly radio airplay on BBC 6 Music, XFM and Amazing Radio.
His music has gained many fans through his folk-based music that also incorporates contemporary electronica with African influences, with a distinct sound that has similarities with Paul Simon. His second single, "Compliment Your Soul" came out in March 2013 and went on to be featured on the soundtrack for the video game "FIFA 14." A remix of his song "From Nowhere," by Baardsen, also appeared on the soundtrack for "Grand Theft Auto V."
Croll released his debut album in March 2014, titled "Sweet Disarray." The album was released through Deram Records in the UK. The album received a positive critical response and was considered a strong debut from Croll.
Live reviews
Between talking in his British accent between songs and his dreamy/catchy/dance-y songs, there is something to swoon about for the boys and girls. Dan Croll has been noted for his Paul Simon-like melodies mixed with modern electronic beats. Makes for a pretty amazing combo. Two years after his popular single "From Nowhere" came out, he finally released his debut album in April of 2014. I saw him in a small venue in Colorado (Larimer Lounge - my favorite small venue if you ever have a chance to go), and everyone was moving around and dancing to his electro-backed songs. Dan sings and plays an array of instruments including (but not limited to): piano, trumpet, guitar, bass, and drums. His voice comes through really well in a live setting and wasn't drowned out by the other band members. There wasn't anything off the beaten path that happened during the show, but when you have a voice like his...you don't really need to distract from that with on-stage antics. Definitely no disappointment in the concert and would love to see him again next time he comes back to the great state of Colorado. If Dan is stopping by your hood, definitely go check him out for a mixture of fun/dance songs mixed with mellow songs that entrench you in his melodic voice.
